As the leaves fall and the weather cools, we in Minnesota know what’s coming next: winter. To get ready for the cold and snow, there are a few home projects that you should check off your list before the snow flies.
Home Projects to Complete Before Winter
- Trim Trees
Inspect and trim low-hanging or dying hedges and tree branches to prevent them from doing damage during winter storms. According to Family Handyman, don’t trim more than you need. Wait until trees are dormant (in the early spring) to do annual pruning.
- Spread Mulch
Spread new mulch around perennial plants to insulate them from cold temperatures and protect them from critters.
- Clean and Tune Up Lawn Equipment
Your lawnmower and other lawn tools and equipment have worked hard all summer. Give them a good cleaning and tuning as needed before putting them away for the winter.
- Winterize Irrigation Systems
If water freezes in your irrigation system, it could ruin the sprinklers. Blow out the system, put away hoses, and turn off the water to exterior faucets.
- Hibernate Air Conditioning Units
Clean your outdoor AC unit, and cover it to protect it from snow and moisture.
- Clean Carpet
Carpets tend to be dirtiest after the spring and summer months. Give them a good clean for a healthier indoor environment through the winter.
- Check Insulation
Take a close look at the weatherstripping around doors and windows, and replace it as needed. Also, look for air leaks in the attic, and seal with foam insulation as needed.
- Clean Gutters
Carefully climb up to gutters and remove leaves and debris. This will help prevent overflow and ice dams.
