Has your lawn become uneven, with noticeable dips and divots in different parts of the yard? This naturally happens over time, due to various causes including drainage issues, heavy use, and natural settling. But your lawn can become level again with some effort – and Broadway Rental’s lawn and garden rental equipment!
According to The Spruce, the tactics used to level a lawn depend on how uneven it is. If the lopsidedness is relatively minor, simple topsoiling may solve the problem. A lawn that is more uneven will probably require more effort over a longer period of time.
What is Topsoiling?
Topsoiling is the process of spreading a mix of fine sand, topsoil, and compost on top of low areas of grass. Compost adds nutrients to the soil to encourage grass growth, while sand provides good drainage.
The ideal topsoiling mix is 40 percent sand, 40 percent topsoil, and 20 percent compost. Don’t use plant debris or mulch, as those can smother the grass.
Topsoiling to Level the Lawn
The general process for topsoiling uneven grass:
- Apply up to 1/2 inch of leveling mix on low spots, then rake the topsoil until it’s evenly spread.
- Brush grass back and forth with a push broom. This works the mix into the soil while lifting grass blades up.
- Water lightly. Over-watering can wash away the topsoil.
- Repeat as needed until the lawn is level.
For Small Sunken Patches
If you have small sunken areas, you can actually pick up the grass and add dirt underneath. Make sure the grass is healthy first! Then, using a manual lawn edger or flat spade, make clean vertical cuts along the edges of the sunken area. Remove the patch of turf and add a layer of soil, while lightly watering to remove air pockets. Replace the patch, pressing the turf back into place. Water as needed.
For Larger Sunken Areas
If you have sunken spots that are deeper than 2 inches, you may have to start over. Fill the holes with a nutrient-dense soil, adding water to settle the soil as you go. Then, add grass seed and water as needed.
