When you regularly perform basic lawn care tasks, like mowing and trimming, they tend to become second nature. As a result, you probably don’t think too hard about lawn care safety. But as with any DIY home project, it’s important to take all safety precautions in order to protect yourself and your family.
Basic Lawn Care Safety
Regardless of the task you’re performing, follow these three rules for lawn care safety:
- Never leave any tools or equipment unattended, and
- Always follow the safety instructions in the equipment manual.
- Wear closed-toe shoes and gloves, as well as eye and ear protection.
Here are tips for specific pieces of lawn care equipment.
Before mowing, check for hard objects (like landscape rock) that could fly out of the grass and hit you or someone nearby. Watch out for children or pets. If you’re mowing a sloped area, mow side to side rather than up or down. Only mow when grass is dry, and wait for gas mowers to cool before adding gas.
Always keep the trimmer far away from your body, and watch for nearby kids or pets.
Don’t start an edger with the blade touching the ground. If your edger is corded, make sure not to touch the blade to the cord.
In addition to shoes, gloves, and eye and ear protection, you should also wear protective pants when operating a chain saw. If you’re sawing an overhead object, wear a helmet too. Always cut on a dry, stable surface, and lock the chain brake when not using the saw.
Don’t point the blower toward yourself or another person while it’s turned on.
Never put your hand in front of a pressure washer nozzle. Don’t wash from a ladder.
